Hansel & Gretel, published by Random Spectacular

Encouraged by St Jude’s founder, Simon Lewin, Clive Hicks-Jenkins has been riffing on the theme of Hansel & Gretel. His livre d’artiste picture book of the tale recently produced by Random Spectacular, Lewin’s publishing imprint at St Jude’s, sees it playfully reinvented into a folk-horror cautionary tale for the 21st century. Family dysfunction, unhealthy appetites and manslaughter are at the heart of a world in which Liquorice Allsorts are deployed as weapons and gingerbread men bite back. The exhibition will include all the illustrations made for the Hansel & Gretel Picture Book published by Random Spectacular and the designs for the Hansel & Gretel Toy Theatre commissioned from the artist by Benjamin Pollock's Toyshop, plus many studies and associated paintings.

Benjamin Pollock's Hansel & Gretel

Toy theatre kit commissioned from Clive Hicks-Jenkins by Benjamin Pollock's Toyshop, Covent Garden. Published as six A4 prints that can be cut and assembled into a theatre and the six backcloths, two side-wings, and sixteen characters and props necessary to perform the entertaining script provided by the artist. A mini theatre poster for the production at the imaginary 'Theatre Royal, Jury Lane', is included, and the model, the script, the poster and instructions are presented in a handsomely embossed Pollock's folder.

Size of model when constructed: H: 26cm W: 19cm D: 9.5cm. Not for children under 3. Recommended for older children and adults. Designed and Printed in the UK
